Each year, as a marketing company, we like to look back in the year in terms of popular online search trends. Google compiles the search trends for the year into a video that is always quite nostalgic. We explore the UK search trends next to global search trends and see that they are very similar.

The top searched topic in the UK and across the world was the Paris attacks. A total of 897 million + searches on the topic have been performed since the fateful day in November when terrorists attacked innocent victims in the worst violence on French soil since WWII. Many of the searches had to do with loved ones trying to find out if their family and friends were ok. Star Wars is the next most popular search term and is still rising. The much anticipated December 18th release of Star Wars, The Force Awakens as the 7th installment of the wildly popular science fiction series and associated fanfare and advertising partnerships has been a phenomenon. Popular related search terms include Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, and R2-D2.  The top search questions about Star Wars are:

  5. Who is Finn in ‘Star Wars’?

Adele’s return  album has inspired a whopping 400+M searches in the UK. Her new album ‘25’ and all the associated fanfare has made her rise to the fastest trending musician on search. In only a few days, her debut song’s video, “Hello” became the most viewed video of the entire year. It currently has over 640 m+ global views.

In September, Queen Elizabeth  became a top trending topic with over 400+ M searches as the Queen Mum reached a milestone as the longest-reigning British monarch and longest-serving Queen in the history of The Crown. Her reign began on June 2, 1953 and the milestone date occurred on September 9, 2015.
